Jessica Simpson and Ashlee Simpson Talk New Music, Heartbreak, and Prince

The Jessica & Ashlee Show After “the deepest heartbreak of my life,” Jessica Simpson is back with new music — and ready to spill with her sister.

Jessica Simpson and Ashlee Simpson Ross are different women today than the ones smiling above the headline “Sister Power!” on their first magazine cover together, for Teen People’s December 2005 issue. In the two decades since, the sisters, now in their 40s, have each had three children and a couple marriages (famously gaining, in Ashlee’s case, Diana Ross as a mother-in-law) and released even more music; Jessica built her eponymous clothing and shoe label, too. Then, in 2020, Jessica’s memoir, Open Book — in which she candidly discusses her struggles with alcoholism, body image, and surviving fame in the pop-stars-with-purity-rings era — became a best seller. Jessica now finds herself on a new path, one with fewer compromises and more country rock, with the release of an emotional EP, Nashville Canyon Part 1, which includes songs written amid the dissolution of her decadelong marriage to former NFL player Eric Johnson. “Through the deepest heartbreak of my life,” Jessica tells Ashlee at her eclectic jewel-tone-drenched Los Angeles home, filled with feathers, dogs, and memorabilia, “it was the most intense yet enlightening therapy I’ve ever been through.”

Ashlee Simpson Ross: Well, hello, Jessica Simpson. Or shall I say “Rajah”? I’ve always called you Rajah, from Aladdin.

Jessica Simpson: It was the only Nintendo game we played.

ASR: We loved that one. I was just laughing because the last time that we did a joint cover was Teen People. How do you think our lives have changed? Our marriages, breakups, children. I had a baby so early. But what a freaking journey we’ve had. Holy moly. I feel like I’ve changed a lot. What about you?

JS: You and I both. Oh my gosh, 25 years old. I was in a newfound freedom because I was going through a divorce. I was becoming myself all over again.

ASR: We stayed close to each other through these transitions. It’s almost funny, because we’ve been through so many of those.

JS: We stayed close as a family, no matter our parents going through a divorce, no matter all of our divorces. I probably faked it until I made it way more than most. When I first got to Nashville to write my new record last year, I listened to CeCe Winans over and over — “I Surrender All.” Her version still gives me chills because I was there to surrender all. I discovered so much that wasn’t true about the life I was leading that led me to shed everything all over again. Here I am again like I was at 25, out here floating around in the atmosphere on my own, but I know I’ve got my own back and it’s all in God’s hands when we surrender everything. That is our upbringing. Our faith is what always leads us back to our strength, for sure.

Jessica Simpson: “My Power Is In My Vulnerability”

Returning to music and taking over her company, Jessica Simpson is finally in control. Now, she opens up about the challenges of buying herself back.

Ït’s early June and Jessica Simpson is in the emergency room. She woke up with “a sharp pain” in her stomach, she says, and she was “freaked out.” She was right to be concerned. The doctors discovered a twist in her colon — painful, problematic, yet fixable. But two days later she was back in the ER. It was scary; she had three kids at home and no answers.

“I get an MRI,” she tells me, “I’m lying there, waiting for the results.” Then she pauses for dramatic effect: “Basically they said, I’m full of shit. My diagnosis is, I’m full of shit!”

A bowel movement opener over enchiladas at a Mexican restaurant in the valley? Frankly, that’s on brand for Jessica Simpson. Or at least the Jessica Simpson we fell in love with on MTV’s Newlyweds, the seminal early aughts reality series that documented her first marriage to Nick Lachey. Over three seasons, Jessica was a neo-Goldie Hawn, a caricature of a dumb blonde who was (probably) in on the joke, and she’s in fine form today, telling a journalist she thought she was dying when she essentially needed a bowel movement. Or in this case three.

“They gave me all these drinks,” Jessica says of her hospital stay, “and they were like, ‘OK, if you shit three times you can leave.’ And I’m pounding these things so I can get out of there to get home to put my kids to bed.”

Jessica Simpson Shares Details Behind Her Fall Collection and Bold Campaign: ‘Fashion Is Experimenting’

The fashion mogul told PEOPLE she’s currently inspired by TV and film and wanted to bring that out in the latest Jessica Simpson Collection.

Jessica Simpson is bringing the bombshell this season.

The new Jessica Simpson Collection for fall is a blend of bold colors and silhouettes with a bit of that California cool girl vibe that the star is known for.

“I go through phases and stages based on how I feel in my own creative space,” Simpson, 42, tells PEOPLE exclusively. “Right now in my career I am inspired by TV and film and want to bring retro glam to our all American denim staple styles. Fashion is experimenting and channeling different parts of ourselves and our lives through what we wear and this campaign allowed me to give it life.”

The new collection — including vibrant photos full of neons and drama — including mainstays that Simpson’s brand has become known for, like flowy dresses and platform shoes, but she amped it up a little bit this time around. Simpson wanted the collection to still be staples in your closet for every day but give you something to wear that makes you feel confident.

“These are classically inspired pieces to mix and match or wear head to toe,” she shares. “The styling [in the campaign] definitely exudes an air of confidence. Platforms are a mainstay for us — for this season we made a retro version and created brand new silhouettes.”

She added, “We are also having a Western moment happening, which I’m always partial to!”

Happy birthday to the wonderful Jessica Simpson!

Jessica celebrates her 42nd birthday today, and we wanted to wish her a super happy birthday! Have an amazing day with your friends and family. Thank you for inspiring us for so many years.
We were very excited to hear new music from you! Congratulate her on her official Instagram or Facebook.

In honor of Jessica’s birthday, we have updated a new design from talented mauuzeta.com and our website is officially open! The concept was taken from a photo shoot made in 2003 for the album “In This Skin” (this is my favorite shoot and the period when I became a fan of Jessica Simpson). There is a lot of work to be done on the site, so stay tuned for more content!

Also, exclusive photos were added to the gallery that Jill Wachter made in 1998 for the Columbia Records promo. The photo quality is 4000px and this has not been on the internet before.
